Over-the-counter medicines called H2 blockers are among the best ways to treat ulcers, says Dr. Meyers. Drugs in this class include—Pepcid AC, Tagamet HB 200, Axid AR, and Zantac 75. They reduce the output of acid-secreting cells in the stomach, which reduces discomfort and helps ulcers heal more quickly.
"I usually recommend Pepcid because it doesn't interact with other medications that people may be taking," he adds.
One of the best ways to get relief from ulcer pain is to combine antacids with H2 blockers. Antacids will ease discomfort within 10 to 15 minutes, and H2 blockers provide longer-term protection, says Dr. Meyers.
"If you're using H2 blockers, don't take antacids at the same time, because they'll interfere with absorption," Dr. Meyers adds. Take the H2 blocker at the recommended times, then wait an hour or two before using antacids, he advises.
